RUTH JACOBS

Ruth Elaine Olson Jacobs, 82, passed away on February 7, 2018, in the care of her devoted husband and children. She was born on March 21, 1935, in Mt. Pleasant, UT,to Mont and Dora Christensen Olson. Ruth was born with congenitally misshapen feet and spent most of her early life in the care of the Shriner’s Hospital in Salt Lake City. Due to the efforts of courageous doctors, she was able to walk her entire life without assistance. Ruth married the dashing Donald Jacobs on October 25, 1951 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She and Don lived in Salt Lake City during their early married life where she worked for a time as a dental assistant and helped her husband decorate the many homes he built as a general contractor. She moved to Kanab in 1969 to raise her family and support her husband running the Barco Sewing Factory. She and Don also lived in St. George and Orderville. Ruth was a stay-at-home mom caring for her children and supporting their endeavors. She was an excellent cook and seamstress and made many of her daughter’s clothing. She also liked doing ceramics. Ruth was a volunteer in the 4H and PTA Organizations. She had a green thumb and spent many hours growing and canning garden fruits and vegetables. Ruth was an avid reader and was a regular bookmobile and library patron. She loved a good story and liked to laugh. Ruth was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities including primary president many times. She served a mission with her husband to Pennsylvania and Arizona. She was a compassionate woman of great faith and quiet determination and a rescuer of the downtrodden.

She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, her sister Janet (Les) Jackson of Denver, CO, her children: Lynette (Brett) Lamb, Herriman UT; Doug (Carol Lee), Layton, UT; Dale (M’Liss), St. George, UT; Dianne (Doug) Gilbert, Phoenix AZ; Sara (Steve) Mower, Kanab, UT; and Arnold Begay, Tucson, AZ. She leaves behind 23 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved daughter Carolyn.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. in the Kanab South Chapel. Viewing will be Friday night from 6 to 8 p.m. at the South Chapel and Saturday at the Chapel one hour before the funeral with internment following the services in the Kanab City Cemetery.
