Rock Burgoyne

Roscoe “Rock” Hamblin Burgoyne, age 90, died May 17, 2025, at the Three Peaks Care Center in Cedar City, Utah. Roscoe was born on March 24, 1935, in Kanab, Utah, to John and Helen Burgoyne. He was the youngest of two older siblings, Dona Hansen and Johnny Burgoyne. Roscoe grew up in Kanab and spent his summers out on the Kaibab with his father, watching for fires on tall towers. Roscoe excelled in all areas of school, such as speech, drama, music, academics, and athletics. When he graduated from high school, he received an academic and track and field athletic scholarship to the University of Southern California (USC). He held a national record for the high jump at one time. During his four years in college, he married his high school sweetheart on July 20th, 1956, in the Saint George temple. She died on October 2, 2018. After his graduation, he joined the Air Force and later became a supply officer. Rock and Donna were stationed in many places, including Japan and the Philippines. In the Philippines, he was privileged to attend functions with the president of the Philippines. In 1969 he was stationed in Thailand for a year without his family. They lived in various places in the United States but primarily in Concord, California. After over 20 years of military service and at the rank of major, he retired in 1979. Six years later, in 1985, they moved back home to Kanab, where they spent the rest of their lives. Roscoe loved to travel and explore. He often took his family of six camping in a pickup camper, venturing to many places across the western states. On every trip, he’d load the camper bed with rocks, driftwood, and all sorts of treasures he discovered along the way. Roscoe constantly had a project underway. His inventive, creative nature meant he could come up with a solution for anything.

Roscoe celebrated his 90th birthday before he passed away on May 17th, 2025.

Roscoe was preceded in death by his parents, both his siblings, his wife Donna, his daughter Shelly, and his great-grandson Samson. He is survived by his children, Tone (Cathy) Burgoyne, Roxana (Kirk) Allen, Curtis (Wendy) Burgoyne, 9 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, June 2nd, 2025, at 11:00am at the Kanab Cemetery. The viewing will be at the Mosdell Mortuary in Kanab, Utah, from 10:00am to 10:45am on Monday morning.
