Ricky Yellowhorse Sr. (65) from Fredonia, AZ, passed away on Saturday, November 2nd, 2024.
Ricky was born on October 8th, 1959 to Woody and Gloria Mae Yellowhorse in Tuba City, AZ. He was born into to’dich’iinii (Bitterwater clan) and born for kinyaa’aanii (Towering House Clan). His cheii was tl’aashchi’i (Red Bottom People) and his nali was tsi’naajinii (the Blackstreak Wood People).
Ricky attended Fredonia High School and graduated in 1977. Throughout his life, he was known for his warmth, generosity, and tireless work ethic- all attributes of a cowboy.
Ricky’s life was defined by his love for the simple, meaningful things. He cherished time spent with family and friends, always prioritizing their well-being and offering a helping hand whenever needed. His genuine kindness and selflessness made him a pillar of his community, where he touched many lives. Whether it was lending support during difficult times, or offering his expertise, Ricky’s willingness to help others was unmatched. He had a natural gift for making people feel seen and valued, especially within his family.
Ricky was also passionate about roping and had a special bond with animals, particularly horses. His connection with the land and his deep appreciation for his cultural heritage shaped the person he was. Ricky’s love for animals and nature reflected his profound respect for the world around him.
Ricky was never one to sit idle; he had a boundless energy that drove him to take on numerous roles throughout his life. Whether he was working at the homestead, assisting his neighbors, or taking on multiple jobs to support his family, he gave his all. His work with Pipe Springs National Monument was a career highlight, where he dedicated many years of service, helping to preserve and share the history of the land with visitors.
Above all, Ricky was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandpa, and friend. His unwavering care for his family and friends was a testament to the love he carried in his heart. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion, hard work, and an unbreakable bond with those who knew him. Ricky’s memory will live on in the countless lives he touched and the love he gave.
Ricky is survived by his wife Rena, and their children: Ricky Jr & Melodie (Cameron, Cammi, Naveya, Nathaniel, Nathan, Candace, Natalie, Uriah), Ryan & Laurel (RaeLynn), Shane & Megan (Westen & Ryan), Charmaine & Allen (Carson), Shonnie & Juliette Reese (Shone, Zoe, Desean, Olivia, Joe) and Yolanda Benally (Shinea, Shiona, Joshua, Jacob, Shiniyah). Ricky’s surviving siblings include: Lori Lowman, Vernetta Homer, Matilda Yellowhorse, and Randy Yellowhorse. He was preceded in death by his parents, Woody and Gloria, and a daughter Roxanne.
A service will be held at the LDS Church (80 S. Main St, Fredonia, AZ) on Thursday, November 7th beginning with a viewing at 10 am, service at 11 am, burial at the Fredonia Cemetery at 12 pm. A reception, with meal provided, will be held afterward at the LDS Church at 1 pm.
