Paula Zutes

Paula Zutes (Campbell), age 98, passed away peacefully at home on August 3, 2023 surrounded by her loving daughter Spring.

Paula was born in Fulton, New York to Margaret (Bartlett) and William Campbell on July 17, 1925. She was the youngest of six children. Paula graduated from Central Square Hills High School at just 16 years old. As a young woman, Paula explored careers in teaching, secretarial work, nursing, and in the restaurant industry. While working as a waitress she met her future husband, Christopher Zutes. In 1950, they were married, relocated to California, and had four daughters. Chris was an engineer for Kodak, while Paula operated the Gold Dust Café in Sonora, California which they owned. After the death of her husband and youngest daughter, Paula moved to Sedona, Arizona where she opened the Rainbow Café. In Sedona, Paula met Nick Duncan. In 1980, they were married and moved to Kanab, Utah where they became active members in the community. Paula opened a restaurant as well as the Crescent Moon Theater and was named an Icon of Kanab.

Paula was a devoted wife, mother, grandma, great grandma, community member, and friend. She loved cooking and the restaurant business. Even after retiring she continued hosting weekly dinners for her friends at home. Paula loved Kanab. Opening and performing at the theater was a labor of love! She spent much time in her beautiful flower garden, which is regularly photographed by tourists as they stroll the streets of Kanab. Her smile, energy, and wisdom will be missed.

Paula is preceded in death by her parents, Margaret (Bartlett) and William Campbell; three brothers and two sisters; husband Christopher Zutes and her daughter Christine Zutes; and second husband Nick Duncan. She is survived by her daughter, Spring Zutes who loved and cared for Paula up to her passing; daughter Mary Faulkner and son-in-law John Faulkner; daughter Katherine Rucker and son-in-law Paul Rucker; five grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and special friends.

A few days before her passing, Paula celebrated her life surrounded by all her good friends at her 98th birthday party. This event functioned as the perfect service and send-off! The family would like to express our thanks to all her friends that would call and stop by to visit and filled Paula’s life with such joy. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Zion’s Way Hospice 1173 S 250 W, Suite 401A, St. George Utah 84770.
