Catherine Ives

aka Claire

Catherine passed away on December 19, 2021 at the Southgate Senior Living in St. George.  She was born on October 13, 1940 in Scarsdale, Westchester County in New York and spent most of her childhood there.  She attended the Dalton school, Mount Holyoke College, and pursued her PhD in Anthropology at the university of Chicago and did her field work in the Yucatan.  Later she lived in London England, Phoenix Arizona, and eventually settled in Kanab.

She married Malachi McCormick and together they had one daughter, Sion McCormick.  They later divorced.

Catherine loved animals and was a founding member of Best Friends Animal Society.  Claire supported numerous animal and environmental groups.  She also generously helped individuals with their veterinary bills.

She loved to read and was interested in science fiction novels, geology, paleontology, and politics.  She was also a member of several book clubs and a dinner club.  Catherine had an opinion on most topics and usually didn’t hesitate to share it.

Claire was a seeker and studied Buddhism and other world religions.  She also joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and enjoyed participating in the social and service aspects of the Relief Society.

It was her desire to be cremated and have her ashes scattered at Angel Canyon.  Her cremation was handled by Mosdell Mortuary.  She is survived by her daughter Sion McCormick (Adam Halfi) who lives in a kibbutz, in Israel, a nephew, Galen McCowan, and her beloved dogs Shannie, and BooBoo.

A funeral or memorial service will be held at a later date.
