Allen Malmquist

Allen Malmquist, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to many, peacefully passed away on Monday April 8, 2024 in Birmingham, Alabama. Allen was a resident of Moccasin, Fredonia, and Page, Arizona. Allen is survived by his wife Sharron, son John Malmquist (Diane), daughter Lara Hurst (Thomas) and 6 grandchildren, Charlie, Sara, Van, Ashley, Erin and Odette.

Allen was born in San Francisco, California in March of 1941 to George and Ina Malmquist. His mother passed in 1942 and he was raised in Los Altos, California by his father and stepmother Betty and his two brothers, Robert and Richard Malmquist. Allen attended Stanford University and studied Geology. Then he left to travel throughout Europe and ended up in the American Southwest. At Yosemite National Park, he met Ansel Adams and learned his style of photography. Then his travels took him to Tucson Arizona where he worked for an art gallery until he was drafted into the army. He served two years in Alaska and was discharged with special honors. He began his professional life as a park service employee in Zion National Park and Pipe Spring National Monument. Allen’s photography was published and displayed in Zion’s visitor center. While working at Pipe Spring, he met his wife Sharron, a teacher at Fredonia High School. They were married on November 28,1970 in Roll, Arizona. He and Sharron welcomed children John and Lara in the 1970s. He and two friends established Moccasin Tours for adventures in the Grand Canyon, mountains of the four corners region and special trips in Mexico. He completed a degree in Elementary Education at the University of Arizona, and the family moved to Page where they spent the next 40 years teaching and working for the park service on Lake Powell and Lee’s Ferry. Allen was an avid outdoorsman, photographer, and gardner. In 2020 they relocated to Oxford, Alabama to be closer to family.

The family will receive visitors on Sunday, April 21, 2024 from 6:00-7:00 pm in the Relief Society room of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 313 S Lake Powell Blvd, Page AZ. Allen’s service will be Monday, April 22, 2024 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 313 S Lake Powell Blvd, Page, AZ. Viewing 10:00 -11:00 am, Service 11:00-12:00 pm, Graveside 12:00-1:00 pm, Page City Cemetery, 575 S Lake Powell Blvd.

    Sorry for your loss. I loved working for Allen when he was working in Pipe Springs, I was one of the first tour guide that was in high school for the summer. And Sharron was my Home Ec teacher in Fredonia I loved them both.
