Nada Hoyt Brown of Kanab passed away in St. George, Utah on August 15, 2020 at the Dixie Regional Medical Center. She was surrounded by her husband and children. She died of complications after emergency surgery. Nada was the fourth child and first daughter in a family of eight of Ervin Hoyt and Emma Prisbrey Hoyt. She was born July 6, 1932 in Orderville, Utah.
Nada spent her youth in Orderville and on a ranch in Garfield County which was owned by her father. The family spent much of the winter in Orderville where the children could attend school, and summers on the ranch where they had fun times, learned how to raise animals, and spent time taking care of them. It was at the ranch that Nada learned many life molding experiences. They would milk cows and take the milk to the highway where it was picked up for processing. Nada learned to drive at a very young age taking her turn at delivering the milk.
Nada attended schools in Orderville and graduated from Valley High School in 1950. She attended Dixie College for a year where she studied the arts.
In 1950, Nada was the 1st attendant to Miss Kane County, and was called upon to assume some responsibilities of the Queen later in 1950-51.
Nada first met Rex Brown at a community dance at Hillcrest Dance Pavilion on the hills north of Kanab in 1945. Nada was being chaperoned by her tree older brothers, but that didn’t stop the sparks of romance that began. She was 13 years old at the time, Rex was 16. The sparks that ignited at that dance were fanned a few years later, and they were married on September 21, 1951 in the LDS Temple in St. George, Utah.
As this couple began their life together they found work in Salt Lake City, and it was there that their first child Nadine was born. A few years Kenneth, their second, came along. Tiring of the big city, they returned to the Kanab area and their family continued to grow with the arrival of Marlene, Belinda, and Eric rounding out the family.
Nada was a very gifted artist, continually blessing the lives of her family and friends with her abilities and talents. Her many talents included painting, sculpturing, ceramics, silversmithing, lapidary, porcelain dolls, leather work, sewing and quilting. She was also admired for her candy making, homemade donuts, ice cream, chocolate chip cookies, brownies, and one of the most productive gardens in Kanab.
Nada was respected for the years she spent teaching the youth in Cub Scouts, 4-H, Primary and the Young Women’s organization of her church. However, the most admirable talent that will be missed by her family and friends is her ability to love and serve.
Nada and Rex served a proselyting mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from January 1992 through July 1993 in Manchester, England where many lifetime frends were made.
Nada is survived by her husband Rex; children Nadine Brown Young, Kenneth Rex (Cindy) Brown, Marlene Brown, Belinda Lee (Darrin) Lamoreaux, and Eric Ervin (Peggy) Brown; siblings Val Foremaster (Mera) Hoyt, Gaylan (JoLynn) Hoyt, and Vondell (Ferril) Hitesman; eleven grandchildren, thirty-one great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Marvin Prisbrey (Juniece) Hoyt, Ervin Howard (Norene) Hoyt, Phillip Spencer (Bernice) Hoyt, and sister Virginia (John Jay) Esplin.
A family service will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2020 at Mosdell Mortuary. A public viewing will be held Friday evening at the Mortuary from 6:00-8:00 PM. Burial will be in the Kanab Cemetery.
