It is with profound sadness—and a hint of the same mischief that characterized his brief but joy-filled life—that we announce the passing of our beloved Zeniff Murphy Cox, who left us far too soon on July 26, 2024, at the age of 4. Born on January 17, 2020, Zen was the cherished son of Matthew and Elizabeth Cox and a beloved sibling to his sisters, Amellia, Addi, and Audrey.
Zeniff, or simply Zen, was a bundle of energy and laughter, with a knack for turning the ordinary into an adventure. Whether he was riding his mini four-wheeler with an enthusiasm that could only be rivaled by his BB gun antics (yes, even if that meant shooting out the window of his dad’s truck), Zen lived life to the fullest. At the job site, Zen was always prepared with a lighter, a pen, and a knife—tools he carried with the same seriousness as his honorary foreman duties. His remarkable ability to spot what needed doing and dive right in left the adults around him in awe as he would climb on top of the roof, pick up a two-by-four, or operate machinery with a determination that belied his age.
Zen also had his own special rituals at home. He loved waking up to his mom’s gentle nudge and being carried into her room for a cozy snuggle. There, he would greet his dad with a cheerful “hello” and try to mimic the distinctive sound his dad made when yawning. If his dad hadn’t gotten the fire started in the morning, Zen was always eager to take on the task himself, delighting in starting the fire in the wood stove.
Zen loved his wonderful sisters, no matter how often they may have bugged each other or the simple “aaaahhhh Zeeeeeeennnn”. Zen absolutely loved them and missed them during the day while they were at school.
Zen’s love for the outdoors was boundless. He could often be found riding on the front of the side-by-side or joining his mom to help feed the horse. Though he was eager to pitch in, he insisted on using his mom’s pitchfork because he thought his own was too small. Whenever the family went hiking, Zen took delight in starting a small fire, adding a spark of adventure to their outings.
One of Zen’s most cherished relationships was with his Grammy. From just over a year old, he would put on any clothes he could find (or, sometimes, nothing at all) and make his daily trek across the pasture to her house. There, he’d help her out and add his own brand of charm and mischief to every task. Whether he was “helping” with chores or simply spending time together, Zen had a way of making every moment memorable.
Zen’s laughter and spirited presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A small service to celebrate Zen’s life will be held at a time still to be determined. The family would like to share their appreciation for thoughts, prayers, donations, love, and support. Thank you so very much, this has meant so much and helped beyond measure.
Though Zen’s time with us was all too brief, his light shone brightly, and his memory will forever bring smiles and warmth to those who knew him. He will be deeply missed and remembered with love and infinite joy.
